    "Exactly what I needed!"

"I was initially skeptical about the site, just because the layout seemed a little sketchy...but man am I glad I found you guys! I purchased an 1884 sporter Trapdoor carbine (S/N showed it was assembled in 1887-88), and had quickly realized using any modern loads was resulting in far too powerful recoil, and initial bullet climb once it left the muzzle-end of my rifle. My relief was that the barrel was milled and definitely a repro, most likely lathed, so any potential "damage" was avoided, if not greatly prevented...but I knew I needed to get the appropriate load, no doubt about it! Used to kick like a mule, but bought 2 boxes of this stuff, and now I see why people love these trapdoor loads! The performance and comfort change was night and day! I could zero easier, shoot standing with far less pain in my shoulder (first time actually bruised me in 2 spots on my shoulder!), and the noise difference was very noticeable as well! Will almost certainly be buying this load again in the future, some of the most affordable and all around best loads there are for this platform! Thanks Steinel-Crew! Stay safe, shoot straight."

    "Excellent Customer Service"

"I bought two boxes of this ammo for my 1873 Trapdoor Springfield. When it arrived the packaging only contained one box. I sent an email and immediately received a reply from Andy himself who apologized for the inconvenience and confirmed the second box had been shipped. Excellent customer service that is uncommon these days!"

    "Trapdoor Ammo"

"I bought a box for my 1873 Trapdoor and they performed flawlessly! Since my entire family fell in love with the gun, I had to buy 2 more boxes. Great ammo, great prices, and great customer service. Can't ask for more."

    "Outstanding ammunition"

"Purchased this ammunition for my Model 1877 trapdoor carbine. This is the best 45-70 cowboy action load on the market. I'm floored how good this stuff was. I have fired different trapdoor cowboy action loads from other brands. And have found most of it is very dirty, and leaves behind alot of unburned powder in the chamber area. As well as the breech area. This stuff is clean burning, and little to no fouling. The clean up job after the range trip was very quick too. Plus, even though the load is light in recoil compared to the other brands. The accuracy was phenomenal. I was able to make some good groups with this old carbine. Thank you guys so much for your hard work! Because of that we can keep these old girls shooting. I also can't wait to see how this ammunition performs in my Remington 1885 Naval rifle as well. And yes I will be buying more!"

    "Recent purchase"

"I fired this ammo today, very accurate in my relined barrel Springfield trapdoor cavery carbine, very accurate at 100 yards, the muzzle velocity is 100 fps faster then the original carbine load, shot the normal 12 inches high battle sight setting, I tried the H.M.S, cowboy action loads, the bullets keyholed at 100 yards with my carbine, my girlfriend wants me to get the red tip bullets next time , ??"

Our 45-70 Is Ready To Shoot

This is our favorite 45-70 for light-recoil plinking. Developed with the 1873 “Trapdoor” Springfield in mind, it is a great option for any rifle (or revolver) chambered in 45/70. These projectiles are cast from a softer alloy ideal for the lower pressure and velocity of a proper Trapdoor load.

    Our 45-70 in action.

    Why Use 45-70 Trapdoor Ammo?

Our 45-70 Springfield trapdoor bullets are loaded with smokeless powder, and every batch is pressure tested to ensure they do not exceed the limits of older rifles. Not only do we pressure test in a universal receiver, but we also use a Trapdoor rifle to test the velocity and completeness of burn. Because this is an ammo typically used for a vintage firearm, they are widely used for target shooting to experience the feel of an old rifle. If you’re looking to see what it’s like handling an older-style weapon with the bullets that were intended for it, look no further than our trapdoor loads at Steinel Ammo.
